Damn, I knew Steph was kind of like a car jockey, but I didn’t realize she was that tiny. I think she’d be uncomfortable in something with seriously bolstered seats because she’s well outside the size range they target .

Puffalump cameo!

It’s 2010 and Mitsubishi’s performance numbers sound like they’re still in the 90s. I believe these were still the numbers through the end of production of the Lancer. No wonder they’re dying.

Comparing them to Chrysler: Accurate. Note that they target the same subprime portion of the market (although, so does Nissan).

Accurate assessment of the kind of dude that owns one of these, too. If I had a teenage daughter and she brought a guy home that drives a Lancer (or a WRX), I’d just start nonchalantly cleaning my pistols on the dining room table while they’re there and give him crazy eye looks so he’d get the hint.

Stef! What is this CVT garbage?

Does she have any mods on this car? T ires? Springs? Shocks?

There’s a reason I like to call Stef the tiny human. And as far as I know the only performance mod is track pads

Bolsters are fine? Usually fine. It’s the big dudes who usually get in and complain that the seat is poking or pinching them mid-back or something.

The Lancer’s numbers weren’t that far off a contemporary Mazda3's (or the current one, which I looked up out of curiosity) . That was what I was looking the hardest at elsewhere thanks to a lack of Fiesta hatchbacks to be had. Regular compact cars don’t make big numbers, even today. Makes adequate torques = Stef happy.

My parents bought the car for me and didn’t want to pay for me to learn stick on it. Never mind that I’ve sort of done that with my 944 anyway, and haven’t had to replace a clutch on that yet. CVT > conventional automatic, though. That is my hot take and I will defend it to the death.

Only mods are a good alignment (bit more toe-out), nicer summer tires (RE-71Rs at the moment) and track pads (G-Loc’s R10 in front, R8 in back).

Also, please be nice to the good Lancer dudes.

The big thing is that a CVT (or CVT-like transmission) needs to be responsive.

I’m glaring at you, the ~2010 Jeep Patriot that my employer rented for me 8 years ago. (Which I think is actually the same transmission, and almost the same engine (different head) , as your Lancer...) Holy hell was that thing programmed badly. (Fastest acceleration was obtained by putting it into “first” gear, flooring it, and then popping it into Drive when it hit 6000 RPM. I got 14 MPG.)

But, if it’s responsive like the power split device in my Prius? Yeah, I’ll take that any day over a stepped gear automatic (whether torque converter, DCT, or (oh god it’s terrible) single-clutch). Hell, depending on what the car’s trying to do, I’ll take it over a manual.

Stepped-gear CVTs are the worst. Just make it a CVT. The buying public will get used to it, so stop dumbing things down for them. The CVT is smoother when it’s allowed to be a CVT.

How do you feel about things like what Honda does with their CVTs, artificially ramping up engine RPM smoothly with acceleration, BTW? (That is, the transmission could go to full power RPM immediately, but it instead ramps up to preserve more of a sensation of acceleration.)

Also, I actually think there’d be a neat use for the fake shifting mode on CVTs: instead of picking a fixed gear, pick a fixed engine speed. It wouldn’t be that useful , but it’d be unique and it’d be more useful than the stepped gears - basically just downshift until you’re at your target RPM, maybe to hold an RPM through a corner so you don’t have to wait for it to spin back up, or get more engine braking on a descent?

I have used the fake gears to engine brake before (notably, when I discover that my brake pads are making a grindy metal-on-metal sound that they shouldn’t be!).

I don’t know enough about Honda’s system to comment, but it makes sense that a CVT would ramp up smoothly. One, it’s got to be usable on the street. Two, the engine also has to speed up to where it needs to be.
